This is the sight of Mr. Boone Fuminori Nakamura’s activities in the city of Hiroshima to eliminate the school entrance examination system in Japan. Also, he wants to establish the free-medicine and free-education society in Japan. ( Education and medicine are very costly in Japan.) Please see this homepage with a  “ full-screen ”  mode.

[Picture]   This picture was taken in the Peace park, or “Heiwa kou-en” in Japanese,” which is located at the center of the city of Hiroshima. The building behind the bicycle is called “the atomic memorial dorm.” A couple of kilometers above this dorm, the first atomic bomb was blasted and decimated the city in the early morning on August 6th, 1945.

   This picture was taken many years ago during the early stage of my activities when the bicycle stared moving smoothly without much problem. Until coming to this stage, the bicycle needed to re-design and modify several times. The flag was blown off by the gust of wind or sometimes supporting rods were bent and welding portions were broken off. One time, I was flipped over together with the bicycle by the strong gust of wind at the entrance to a bridge, and I almost broke my arm. But, the worst part of my activities at the early stage was not relating to push my bicycle but the reaction of the people on the streets. Japan is a very much unified society. The social standards and orders are well established, and the people walk in the same direction with the same pace in the unified manner. Deviating from the standards is a kind of taboo in the Japanese society. And, here comes Nakamura pushing his crazy looking bicycle with the big flag attached at the tail and shouting “Abandon the Entrance Examinations” through the laud speakers on the streets. People thought I was a radical extremist trying to disturb the society. When I bowed to the people on a street, they just looked opposite side from me and walked away. Also, the police stopped me frequently and questioned me about my status in the city. But, I was full of energy and hope in these days.

   “I will abandon the entrance examinations in Japan. I will bring the US college education system back to Japan. No more entrance examinations.
I will change Japan. I must do, and I will do…”

[Preliminary]  This homepage is written based on my experience through the college life as a student as well as a professor in the USA. In this homepage, especially in the education field, I discuss the materials which are commonly practiced in the USA but not known at all or not recognized in the Japanese society.

   These subjects are contained in the corresponding sub-pages in the Japanese version of my homepage. In this English version of my homepage, I discuss mainly about the Japanese education system, and the subjects which are not related to the Japanese education system may be translated and discussed briefly.

[Introduction]   Harvard University does not conduct the entrance examination. In England, Oxford University and Cambridge University do not conduct the entrance examinations either. The USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and European countries, such as England, France, Germany, none of the countries conduct entrance examinations. Only region in the world, which conducts entrance examinations, is Asia. Japan, Korea, India, China, and other countries, all conduct entrance examinations. If Japan gives up the entrance examination system and introduces the US college education system, which is by far the better system than the Japanese system, the wave will propagate throughout Asia, and Asian countries, such as Korea, India, China, will follow the trend, give up their entrance examination systems and introduce the US college education system to their countries. It is like a domino, and what I have been doing in the city of Hiroshima is to inflict the first knock to the domino in Japan. The more the people are educated, the better the society becomes. If the entire region in Asia will become the entrance examination free, then any people in the region will be able to access the higher college education just as the people in the USA can access the college education freely. And, the education level of the people in Asia will rise grossly, which will create new Asia and contribute tremendously to the world and to the mankind.

   The entrance examination system is a very much deviated system. It is not an education but a competition among the youngsters in school. By the time the youngsters become adult, their minds are more or less twisted and warped from the norm. This deviated system is the root of all kinds of social problems and evils in Japan.

   When I go to a convenient store, such as 7-11-store, in Japan, I see young people working with the minimum wages. There is no difference between these young people and the students of Tokyo University which is the top university in Japan. They are equally all Japanese youngsters. Only difference between the two groups of these young people is the places where they were born, rich or poor. Conducting the entrance examinations and baring the students from getting the higher college education is just insane. The college education should be opened and provided equally for anybody, rich or poor, especially for the young people who seek for the higher education.

[Picture]   My classes were usually packed with students. (The class limit is 30 students.) Sometimes, I needed to take overflow of students in my classes. The picture is showing my basic computer science course for the non-science major students. These students were to become teachers, lawyers, physicians, policemen. fire-fighters, businessmen, and etc. They would become the major part of the society in the USA. They should be educated properly, and that was my motto to teach these courses in the university. In the picture, I am receiving a question from the student with his pair of grasses on.

1.  The entrance examination and school system in Japan
   The Japanese school education consists of six years of grammar school, three years of junior high school, three years of high school, and four years of college or university education. Grammar school and junior high school until ninth grade education are compulsory by the law, which means that all youngsters must go through nine years of school education in Japan. To get into high schools after the ninth grade, students must go through the entrance examinations. Even the public high schools, which are held by the taxpayers’ money, conduct their entrance examinations. If students fail to pass the entrance examinations to the public high schools, they must go to the private high schools which are expensive.

   For the private school system, junior high school and high school are combined together for six years of schooling, and they usually conduct their entrance examinations to their junior high schools just before students graduate from their grammar schools. Sometimes, for the private sector, a kindergarten through a university is all combined in one unit, and they conduct their entrance examination to their kindergarten at five years old. Once children get into the kindergarten, the children progress their grade automatically from the first grade through the twelfth grade and graduate from the university without encountering further entrance examinations.

   There are two kinds of high schools in Japan. One is regular high schools in which the students are preparing to enter universities and colleges to get further education. The other is a trade-based high school, such as industrial/technical high schools, and business/commerce high schools. The students in these trade-based high schools are not aiming to progress their farther education in colleges and universities. After graduating these trade-based high schools, the students get jobs in their corresponding fields.

   The national, or state universities, are considered as the first class universities in Japan. The competitions to get into these national universities, especially the top notch universities such as Tokyo university, start even from the first grade in grammar schools. Junior/high schools are ranked by the number of the students getting into the first class universities, and many private junior/high schools are considered to be the first class. Parents want their children to enter these first class junior/high schools and send their children to a privately owned night school called “Juekue” which is strictly designed to prepare students to pass entrance examinations of the students’ aiming junior/high schools and universities. During this period in the secondary school, the pressure to excel in academics among the students is very high, and sometimes students commit suicide just because their grades get lower.

   However, once the students get into colleges and universities, they are not required to study much. Colleges and universities in Japan are vacation places for the students for four years. One college student told me that he had spent so much time and energy in academics during his secondary school years that he needed vacation, and it was justifiable for him to take a brake in his college life for four years.

   It is all deviated education system in Japan. The subjects which students learn during the secondary schools are just basic, and the knowledge acquiring through the college education is by far the most important to live in this very complicated social systems in the modern society. No matter how complicated “an addition” becomes in the secondary schools, it is just “an addition” which is within the realm of arithmetic. The students need to cope with these basic materials in the secondary schools and spend so much time and energy in order to excel and pass the entrance examinations of their targeting schools and universities. Then, most important college studies are all neglected.

[Picture]   This is another scene of my lecture many years ago. In those days, a cell-phone was not introduced in our society nor Windows internet communication yet. The computer was just started gaining the popularity among the people, and none of the students in my class had their own computers in their rooms. I was talking about the future coming technology, the computer communications, in my class. One time I pulled my wallet out of my pocket, opened it as we open our cell-phones, and said “This will become a telephone and a computer in the future. You will send your mails and receive mails through this machine, and you will purchase an airline ticket by using this machine… ” Most of the students seemed very much skeptical and did not believe it in my class. The computer technology has been progressing so rapidly that the same people, who used to be skeptical in my class, are using iphones nowadays in New York.


2. The US college education system
   My intention of my campaign is to introduce and transplant the US college education system which I am familiar with to Japan. There is an extensive net work of community colleges, or two year junior colleges, in the USA. These colleges are to provide average citizens in a local community with the introductory level of the college education as well as the vocational training for the job opportunities. There are over one hundred community colleges and their branch schools in California State. This means that even a resident in a small local town in California can access at least one community college within a driving distance and get job training as well as starting the college education. In Guam, which is a pacific island located two thousand miles west of Hawaii, the US government has established University of Guam which provides regular four year programs and some graduate programs. Also, in Guam, there is a community college for the residents’ education and job training. Even in Micronesia, the territory of the USA in the south pacific, the US government has established a community college in Track Island for the regional residents. After graduating from these community colleges, the students can transfer to the major universities in the US mainland such as California State Universities. This well developed community college system network covering the entire USA and providing the education and job training for the citizens is the foundation of the strength of the USA.

   In Japan, we do not have the community college system like the one in the USA. Also, the college credits are not transferable to other colleges and universities, while the college credits in the USA are acknowledged through out the US college system and transferable from one college or university to the other. I like to establish the US type community college system network throughout Japan.

Note:   The community colleges, or two year junior colleges, in the USA are not trivial secondary college education programs. They offer the first class entry level college education to the citizens in the local communities. The courses taught in the community colleges are well organized and established. They use the same level of text books for their courses as Harvard University uses for the first year and second year courses. While university professors are to do research as well as teaching, the community college professors are not required to do research, so that they exert 100% of their energy for teaching. I took one class in the community college in New York while I was a student. The class was one of the best classes which I had ever taken in my college life in the USA.

[Picture]  This is the scene when I finished my lecture in the class. The students came up to me and were checking the materials which I brought to the class. This basic computer science course covered the entire range of the computer science which started with “the history of the computers” through “how the computers work,” software, and hardware. I mimicked and paralleled the functions of the computers with the human’s brain in order to make it easy for the average non-science major students to understand the system of the computers. “Easy to understand” is very important for the beginners in any subject, and it was the key of my lecture. The course consisted with 50% as a lecture and 50% as a lab. In the lab, the students needed to operate computers with a few different kinds of software.   The student, who was taking my pictures, said "Hey, Boone(my name)..." and I raised my hand and answered to him.


3. Renaissance in Japan
   I explain briefly about the history of Japan, which is the foundation of the culture or the social standard and custom in Japan.

   Japan is an old country. She has two thousand year of history, and most part of her history was ruled by the “Samurais,” the lord-worriers with their swords. Obedience to the Samurais was the virtue of the common people, mostly farmers, during the Samurai era. And, the culture, “obedience” still prevails, and the people are apt to follow the government in the modern society in Japan.

   In 1853, Admiral Perry of the US Navy came to Tokyo bay with his four battle ships and forced the Samurais to open the ports in Japan. Until then, all ports, except one port in the southern Japan, had been closed for over 250 years. Admiral Perry and his four battle ships created tremendous upheaval and turmoil in Samurai Japan. And, at the end, “Shogun,” the king of all Samurai lords, returned the throne to the Emperor Meiji. This is called “Meiji restoration” which took place in 1867.

   During the Samurai era, Shogun in Edo, or currently Tokyo, controlled entire Japan. A local Samurai lord must have obeyed and taken order from Shogun. This is called the centralization of the power. After the Meiji Restoration, Meiji government wanted to keep the centralization of the power. They needed to establish the bureaucratic control system centralized at the Tokyo government. They established Tokyo Imperial University, or currently Tokyo University, and the graduates from Tokyo Imperial University became the government bureaucrats in the central government as well as the local governments throughout Japan. The centralization has been kept on going until today, and the government officials in the central government as well as the local governments, such as Hiroshima prefectural government, are all dominated by the Tokyo University graduates. If I would successfully conduct my operation and eliminate the entrance examination system in Japan, then the entrance examination to Tokyo University would also be eliminated. This means that there will be no Tokyo-University-graduates-bureaucrats produced any more and that the centralized control system in Japan will be collapsed first time in 2000 years of history in Japan. It will be the revolution which Japan will experience first time in her history. The foundation of the culture, “obedience”, will disappear, and Japan will become truly a democratic society. So, eliminating the entrance examination system will be a tremendous impact to the Japanese society.

   There is a bulletin board at the student union in University of Hawaii. Many notes are attached on the board showing the current activities ongoing in the university. Not only the university students but the ordinary citizens are welcomed and invited to these activities. The examples of the activities are:

  1.  Dance (Hawaiian, Tahiti, Samba, bawl dance, )
  2.  Pottery
  3.  Gardening
  4.  Art painting
  5.  Cooking (introducing various kind of cooking from the world)
  6.  Sport (scuba diving, surfing, golf, tennis, etc)
  7.  Star observation (go to the field in the suburb of Honolulu city by a microbus, and observe stars under the instruction of an astronomy professor)
  8.  Politics (People gather in a large lecture hall and discus the current issues, or sometimes the materials which are not reported by the mass communications) etc…

   In the music department in University of Hawaii, there are about twenty sound-proofed small piano rooms. These rooms are open throughout a day, and any citizen can utilize these rooms with his/her appropriate ID. Also, introductory courses in guitar, piano, and other music instruments are offered to the citizens as well as the students. The physical education department in the University offers many introductory courses in tennis, golf, sailing, scuba-diving, and etc, and again the citizens are all welcomed to take these courses.

   What we need in Japan is open universities. Young and old, and females and males, all congregate together in universities and do activities, make discussions, and study and learn along with the professors, the high intellectuals. Universities, the cultural oases, will become the central part of the society, and the activities in the universities will become a part of the daily life of the citizens in Japan. It will be the renaissance in Japan for the 21century and after.
